Why Cite?

It's important to cite sources because:

  • Citations allow others to find the sources you used in your research.
  • They help establish the credibility of your research.
  • They acknowledge the work of others who have made your own research possible.
  • And last but certainly not least, they help you avoid plagiarizing!

Where do I Find the DOI?

APA prefers that DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) are used for article citations. DOIs can be found in the article record in the database, or you can search for the article title in CrossRef below. (Note: Some articles--especially older ones--will not have a DOI.)

Citation Managers

What is a citation manager?

Citation managers are programs that allow the users to collect, organize, and cite sources. They also allow for collaboration and some provide the ability to store and annotate PDFs within the system. 

Why use a citation manager?

  • Organize sources using folders, tags, and even group libraries for collaboration with people across the world.
  • Many have browser extensions or integration with library software to make it easy to collect items while you research.
  • Many integrate with Google Docs and/or Microsoft Word to make it easy to cite sources while writing.
  • Note: Always double-check auto-generated citations for missing information or mistakes.
