IV. Developing Assessment

Determine your assessment instrument

Ask yourself the following questions:

1. How will you measure how students will demonstrates that they have understood the learning outcome and can apply it to their research skills?

2. Do you want to stick with formative assessment that measures how much the student has learned at the end of the library session or measure how much they have retained at the end of the semester with summative assessment.

3. What kind of assessment would be best to measure your learning outcomes?

4. What will you do with the data?

Selecting methods of assessment

1. Oxford Brookes University offers information and resources on the different assessment methods available and how to choose the best one for your class.

2. The In-House Information Literacy Assessment Tool was developed by the university library and can be customized for your class.

What rubrics can I use?

1. Association of American Colleges and Universities's Information Literacy Value Rubric: This rubric determines how well students are accomplishing a specific learning outcome.  

2. RAILS revised AAC & U Information Literacy Rubric: The Rails site also has a number of other information literacy rubrics that could be used as a starting point:
