Resources in documenting, storing and preserving research data

NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a new Data Management and Sharing (DMS) policy, effective January 25, 2023. This new policy requires Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) for all NIH-funded research that results in the generation of scientific data.

  • NIH requires that researchers discuss 6 elements around how they will manage and share their data
  • Submit a DMS plan for review when applying for funding
  • Comply with the approved DMS plan
  • NIH Program Staff will assess DMS plans, but not part of overall impact score

Elements of an NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan (2023):

  • Data type
  • Related tools, software, and/or code
  • Data standards
  • Data preservation, access, and associated timelines
  • Access, distribution, or reuse considerations
  • Oversight of data management and sharing

You can find the entire policy, along with resources, on the NIH website:
