There are more than 60 graduate schools in the United States that offer a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree. Be sure to choose one that is accredited by the American Library Association. These are schools that have met the American Library Association's high standards of quality. You will find schools that are online only, in-person, or have hybrid programs. You will want to decide what format best serves your needs. The information on this page is for the MLIS program at San Jose State's School of Information, which is an online-only school.
1. Application Period: October 1-May 1. You need an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply.
2. Complete the Cal State Apply Application ( https://www2.calstate.edu/apply ). For help filling out the application, watch this short video: https://ischool.sjsu.edu/cal-state-apply-tutorial
Not required: A GRE, work experience, academic references, academic honors, and a statement of purpose are not necessary. In the boxes provided on the form, leave these boxes blank. For the “Statement of Purpose” box, only type in the words “not applicable.”
3. Pay the CSU application fee, which is currently $70.
4. Send your college transcripts as soon as you submit the application. You can order your transcripts from the Office of the Registrar at your college.
5. It can take up to 8 weeks for your application to be evaluated.
6. When you're accepted, you will receive an email from the School of Information. Congratulations!
